I am an amateur but haven't there been experiments in planes showing clocks slowing--or 'time dilation'?

Sure, explained here - https://unstabbinated.substack.com/p/relativity-and-its-confusion-over?utm_source=publication-search

Time will dilate (fractionally) due to an aether and gravity, not 'Relativity'. Relativity has no physical processes attached to it (the claim is that velocity = gravity but this is false). Time differences between the cosmos and the Earth is one of the few insights of Einstein but no one takes it to the logical endpoint. Cheers.
